Treatment Options

At the Prostate Institute of America (PIA) we believe that a multidisciplinary and multiteam approach allows patients to have a full spectrum of knowledge and a complete understanding of the disease and the available treatment options. At each step of the treatment process, we strive to inform our patients in a way that alleviates the fear and anxiety often associated with prostate cancer.

Dr. Duke Bahn, one of the world’s leading practitioners in the study and treatment of prostate cancer, is the Medical Director of the Institute. Dr. Bahn has personally established a referral network of medical professionals—both locally and nationwide—that includes urologists, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists and psychologists devoted to the overall care of patients suffering from this disease.

Although we recognize that the following is not a complete list of every available option, it does present the seven most common approaches to addressing prostate cancer.

Active Surveillance
Watching cancer without treatment has long been a standard approach in the very elderly. However, today there are logical reasons to consider that Active Surveillance in good risk patents might be a safe and acceptable approach. more >
Cryotherapy
The controlled freezing of the prostate gland in order to destroy both the cancerous and surrounding tissue. It is done under sophisticated intra-operative ultrasound guidance. more >
Focal Cryotherapy
This provides an alternative to Active Surveillance for those patients who do not want to just watch their cancer and yet are not comfortable with any of the more invasive treatment options. more >
Brachytherapy (Seed Implantation)

Brachytherapy is a form of radiation in which tiny pellets containing radioactive material are implanted directly into the tumor-containing prostate, usually under ultrasound guidance. more >

Radiation Therapy
Using a CT Scan that creates a three dimensional image of the prostate area, doctors can specifically focus the radiation beam to target the entire tumor while sparing the surrounding normal tissue. more >
Surgical Treatment
Surgical Treatment, also referred to as a radical prostatectomy, is the removal of the prostate and seminal vesicles with open surgery. Recent developments in the field of surgical robotics have ushered in a new era of minimally invasive surgery that now challenges conventional open surgery. (Da vinci Laproscopic Radical Prostatectomy).

Hormone (Androgen) Deprivation Therapy

This treatment uses medications to suppress male hormone production from the body, based on the fact that the male hormone androgen is responsible for tumor growth. more >
